The Water Council, which leads efforts to position metro Milwaukee as a hub of water research and technology, has added a new staffer: the first North American director of the Alliance for Water Stewardship, an international nonprofit that aims to create the first global water quality and risk standards.

Named to the position was Matt Howard, who has been the sustainability director for the City of Milwaukee for the last five years. Howard, 40, said the new role is a logical extension of his current job, which included writing a 2013 policy report on energy-efficient smart buildings and manufacturing.
