A federal health agency focused on public water sources on Thursday awarded a half-million dollar grant to the newly created School of Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for graduate student research fellowships focused on the Great Lakes.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the $525,000 grant to support six doctoral students – five at UWM and one at UW-Madison. The funding comes from the agency’s Oceans and Human Health Initiative, which exists “to improve understanding and management of the ocean, coasts and Great Lakes to enhance benefits to human health and reduce public health risks,” according to its website.
