In its Global Risks 2015 report, the World Economic Forum rated water crises as the greatest risk facing the planet today, in terms of impact. Humans, plants and animals all need clean water to live, while access also has deep ramifications for global security and the economy—a 2014 survey by the Pacific Institute and VOX Global revealed that 84 percent of U.S. companies believe they will face water-related challenges by 2018. There’s nowhere better poised to address these problems than Wisconsin, and Milwaukee in particular,which has emerged as an international leader in the field of freshwater technology. Statewide, the industry boasts more than 200 companies and 20 academic institutions with a water-based curriculum, many of which are represented by The Water Council, created in 2009 to foster their development.
